After the Supreme Court’s order on Wednesday, the drivers with a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) licence are legally permitted to drive transport vehicles weighing up to 7,500 kilograms.

This order is a big blow for insurance companies which had been rejecting claims if accidents involved transport vehicles of a particular weight if the drivers were holding LMV lisence.

The Supreme Court notes that 170,000 deaths occur each year in India due to road accident but there’s no proof that light vehicle drivers are responsible for rise in accidents.

The Supreme Court observed that many road accidents are due to failure to wear seat belts, mobile phone use, and driving under the influence.
