Southern states often protested against efforts by the central government to privilege Hindi over other languages.

Taking this protest against Hindi a step further, Tamil Nadu removed the rupee symbol ₹, in the state budget, which will be tabled on Friday, and replaced it with Tamil letter Ru, which is the first letter of the Tamil word Rubaai, which denotes the Indian currency in the southern language.

This change of ₹ with Ru, indicates Tamil Nadu was taking its fight with the Centre to the next level, despite knowing the fact that Hindi is the only language spoken and understood not only all over the country, but also in various parts of the world.
